Editorial Review for Paul Bunyan's Famous Cook Shanty – by Peter Behle
The Scene
As you walk through the front door, you'll be reminded that the Dells' main source of income is tourism. The front lobby is a mammoth gift shop, with the all the standard trinkets and toys (including moccasins made in China). The main dining room looks like a frontier log cabin with plastic gingham tablecloths and wooden beams across the ceiling. You pay before you sit, as there is no menu, per se.
The Food
Did I mention all-you-can-eat? Picture eating on a frontier ranch with the "help." The fried chicken was light and crispy. The mashed potatoes were purposely lumpy and very buttery. The homemade bread was addictive. Breakfast starts off with fresh buttermilk donuts, which turn out to be the highlight of the meal--don't be afraid to ask for more. then come giant plates of scrambled eggs, sausage, ham, pancakes and potatoes.

Insider Tips
When to GoThere is a sharp division between breakfast and lunch, as you will discover if you're unfortunate enough to arrive at the shift change at noon.
Know Before You GoIf your group is smaller than six or so, you'll likely be seated with others at the long picnic tables. But each group still gets their own portions, so no need to buddy up if aren't in the mood.

Weren't we the lucky ones to get this stupid waitress who neglected to follow proper safely procedures in handling hot items. She held a hot coffee container and tray of orange juice over my 2 yr old head. She was lost her grip and spilled the tray of orange juice over his head and onto my shoulder and back. Management refused to compensate us and simply stated they were not liable for their staff's accidents. We were unable to finish our meal since we had a 2yr old drenched in orange juice. Several other customers sitting around us also complained how could this be. They also carried a gift shop, why not at least give the baby a T-shirt to change out of since this was their staff's fault. Female manager simply nodded and walked away. STAY AWAY FROM THIS JOINT! THIS TIME IT WAS ORANGE JUICE OVER A TODDLERS HEAD NEXT TIME IT COULD BE HOT COFFEE OVER SOMEONE ELSE CHILD!!!

My wife and I went there for dinner we waited for ever to get our meal and could not eat all we were served, we are small eaters so we asked to take home what they served us (no extra food was orderd) no take home allowed. Not that great eather. Funny thing is you can get the same meal as take out go figure?
Pros: none
Cons: price, service & public relations
